Barenbrug Forage Brassicas Varieties

| Brassicas | Chicory |

Brassicas are generally used to increase the grazing season. All brassicas have highly digestible cell walls and very high protein levels. Turnips (Brassica rapa rapa) can either be grazed or harvested and fed direct. Rapes (Brassica napus) can be grazed or cut for direct feeding. Both species can also be used for green manure. The high production of dry matter both above and below ground level increases organic matter available in the soil.

Barnapoli Forage Rape

Barnapoli is a new medium tall forage rape variety, that produces very high yields, high protein levels, and high digestibility. Barnapoli ranked number one in a recent sheep grazing study, outperforming all other varieties of any Brassica species.

Rangiora Forage Rape

This New Zealand forage rape variety is fast in its establishment and can be grazed multiple times. Rangiora is used for both wildlife and livestock grazing purposes.

Barabas

Barabas is a tetraploid turnip variety with high fresh matter yields. It provides quick bulb development after sowing. It is more shoot yield than bulb yield. Barabas also has good frost tolerance. Barabas is later in maturity than Barkant and has good resistance to bolting. It holds bulb quality longer than Barkant. Barabas has high digestibility (88-91%). It is good for mixtures with Barkant for strip grazing and stockpiling.

Barkant Turnip

Barkant is a very vigorous diploid turnip variety with a purple tankard root type. The variety has a very good leaf and root yield with high sugar and dry-matter content. Ideally suited for grazing with sheep and cattle, it is common to obtain 4–6 tons of dry-matter per acre of this high-energy feed. Barkant is able to provide multiple harvests with the correct grazing management.
