Lolium perenne
Perennial ryegrass is the most important and widely grown cool season forage grass in the world. In the past, perennial ryegrass use in North America was limited because existing varieties were only adapted to regions with mild climates. In the last few years, Barenbrug has successfully introduced more productive and more persistent varieties into North America.

Perennial ryegrass is persistent if soil fertility is high. It also tolerates intensive grazing and cutting by regrowing quickly after defoliation. Since different varieties exhibit a wide range of characteristics such as maturity, winter-hardiness, disease resistance, digestibility, dry-matter production, and persistency, perennial ryegrass fulfills the needs of many different farming systems. Careful management and variety selection ensure the best results.

Perennial ryegrass is ideal for making high quality grass silage, cut and carry, and grazing or planted together with alfalfa.
Barenbrug offers several blends and straight varieties. The benefit of blends is their wider adaptability in different areas. Throughout the past years, these blends have proven their value to many farmers in the USA.

Perennial Ryegrass for the USA

BG-34

BG-34 is a well-established, premium blend of mid to late maturing diploid perennial ryegrasses. The varieties in BG-34 were selected for exceptional palatability and digestibility required for high levels of meat and milk production, persistence, winterhardiness, and disease resistance. In addition to high quality forage, forage yields are also impressive. Being later maturing, BG-34 is perfect for those regions which have wet springs precluding early grazing or cutting.  BG-34 continues to be a winner for both grazing and mechanical harvest.  Alice white clover is the ideal companion.

Tetra-Plus

The new Tetra-plus blend from Barenbrug has been revised and now consists of all tetraploid perennial ryegrass varieties. New perennial ryegrass varieties selected by Barenbrug in United States have improved stand density and winterhardiness. Tetra-plus consists of new tetraploid perennial ryegrass variety Remington. Research has shown that Remington is very persistent, even under very cold temperatures at trial sites in New York, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, whereas many other varieties in these university trials were winterkilled. Tetra-plus is a unique combination of good forage quality, high productivity and stand longevity. Tetra-plus is ideal for green-chop, hay and silage making.

Mara

Mara is a new variety bred in continental Europe (Romania). Mara is the most winter-hardy perennial ryegrass Barenbrug offers. It is the main component of BG-34, BG-23, and is in other Barenbrug mixtures.

BG-24T

BG-24T is a unique, innovative blend of early and intermediate maturing diploid and tetraploid perennial ryegrass varieties. Nearly a decade ago, Barenbrug released BG-34 a blend with late maturing perennial ryegrass varieties. Since then, Barenbrug breeders have selected new more heat and cold tolerant perennial ryegrass varieties at trial sites in USA.  Research by Barenbrug USA has shown that under high summer temperatures, early and intermediate maturing varieties perform better than very late maturing varieties. These new varieties have better disease tolerance and they perform better in the extreme environmental conditions experienced in cool-season grass growing regions of United States. BG-24T consists of mainly diploid perennial ryegrass varieties which provide a dense stand, along with some tetraploid perennial ryegrass which improve the overall palatability and productivity of the grass field.

Remington

Remington is a high-yielding, high-quality tetraploid ryegrass that shares many attributes of a diploid type. Remington was selected in the U.S. for its sward density, high yields, and excellent disease resistance. Remington has improved winter tolerance compared to traditional cultivars. Remington also exhibits improved tolerance to heat and produces longer into the summer than the competition. Remington’s is well-suited to grazing and high-moisture cutting systems. Its exceptional palatability promotes high dry matter intake in a grazing situation. And, as a perennial ryegrass, Remington provides extremely nutritious and digestible forage. Remington is a component in many Barenbrug blends and mixtures such as BG-24T, Tetra-plus, and Beefmaster.

Bronsyn

Bronsyn is a new perennial ryegrass from New Zealand and is currently the most popular variety used in New Zealand. Bronsyn is a high yielding, persistent variety with excellent spring and good summer production. Bronsyn is relatively winter active and as such should be used in areas with milder winters. Bronsyn is available as endophyte-free seed.
