2018 grass harvest was much better than last year. Although some dry land areas were slightly down in yield, irrigated acres were normal to above normal. The Tall Fescue market that we saw stretched thin with availability has finally seen a reprieve. The seed quality also is much better, with seeds being plump vs. thin. This allows the cleaning to keep weeds and other crop seeds out of the finished product .This means cleaner seed coming from the grower.

We have been experiencing some container shortages in the Pacific Northwest market. Thus, it has been necessary to book intermodal loads far in advance. In September there was a delay of up to one week from the time a container was ordered to when the carrier could load. The electronic logging device (ELD) mandate has sometimes added an extra day to the drayage transit time for these loads, depending on the distance to rail site.

A new assessment of forage quality, called total tract neutral detergent fiber digestibility (TTNDFD), allows comparisons across forage species and is now used to balance rations. TTNDFD is an improved assay that predicts the rate of fiber digestion, the rate of passage and total fiber digestibility.

Today’s calves are tomorrow’s herd, so it makes economic sense to give them the best possible start. A productive stand of grass or pasture requires the best start, too. Skimping at establishment will limit its yield potential.

Low-cost milk production and matching feed supply from high quality pasture for 7,000 cows drive the seasonal and rotational grazing system. Gary Nolan: “We’re trying to get up to 80% of the cow’s diet on an annual basis directly from pasture.

An alternative to growing pure alfalfa is to include an improved cool season grass at seeding. At similar maturities, cool season grasses are higher in Neutral Detergent Fiber Digestibility (NDFD) compared to alfalfa and can help manage ration costs.
