Update from Logistics

Intermodal/stack rail

We have been experiencing some container shortages in the Pacific Northwest market. Thus, it has been necessary to book intermodal loads far in advance. In September there was a delay of up to one week from the time a container was ordered to when the carrier could load. The electronic logging device (ELD) mandate has sometimes added an extra day to the drayage transit time for these loads, depending on the distance to rail site.

Over-the-road (OTR)

This is where the largest spike in rates has been. Although rates have declined nationally in the past couple weeks, they are expected to follow the usual holiday trend. That is, they are expected to increase until the new year. The full implementation of the ELD mandate has increased transit times across the board, bringing transit time closer to parity with intermodal for solo trucks. Team trucks remain the best option for hot loads. Specific to the Pacific Northwest market, September wild fires on the Oregon-California border have caused delays and truck shortages for loads going to California.

Less-than-truckload (LTL)

LTL has remained steady with some operational delays for destinations affected by inclement weather in the Southeast.
