Why Choose SOS® 400?

SOS® stands for Super OverSeed, a name earned by Barenbrug's breakthrough turf-type annual ryegrass genetics developed in cooperation with Texas A&M University. Built on the proven Panterra™ genetic line, including Panterra V™, SOS® 400 combines the affordability of traditional annual ryegrass with the improved turf quality, finer texture, darker genetic color, and reliability expected from modern overseeding varieties.

Designed specifically for fall overseeding, SOS® 400 establishes quickly as warm-season turf enters dormancy, creating a dense, attractive playing surface throughout the cool season. Its excellent traffic tolerance, slower growth rate, and predictable spring transition help reduce maintenance while delivering outstanding winter turf quality.

Easy Establishment

SOS® 400 Performing in Florida

SOS® 400 germinates in soil temperatures as low as the mid-40s°F, allowing successful overseeding later into the fall than many alternatives. Rapid establishment helps extend the playing season while maintaining an attractive green surface throughout winter.

For best results:

  • Seed in the fall as warm-season turf enters dormancy.
  • Seed at 10 to 15 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft.
  • Vertically mow and scalp existing Bermudagrass before seeding to maximize seed-to-soil contact.
  • Keep the seedbed consistently moist during germination.

Under favorable conditions, germination typically begins within 3–5 days and establishment is completed in just over one week. As overnight temperatures consistently reach 60–65°F in late spring, SOS® 400 naturally transitions out, allowing permanent warm-season turf to recover without chemical removal.
